Let’s talk about something that can make or break your flight experience: food. While some people rely on in-flight meals or airport snacks, I’ve learned the hard way that it’s always better to come prepared. Cold pizza, apples, pre-made sandwiches, granola bars, and even a few goodies from Bulk Barn—these are my go-to carry-on staples. And yes, I’ve surprised a few coworkers with my travel snack stash!
Why Pack Your Own Food?
It all started with a five-hour flight where the food cart ran out before it reached my row. No snacks, no meals—just a grumbling stomach and a long, uncomfortable journey. Since then, I’ve made it a rule to never board a plane without my own food. Not only does it keep hunger at bay, but it also helps me avoid motion sickness, which tends to hit harder on an empty stomach.
Traveling with Kids? Pack Even More.
If you’ve ever traveled with children—or even sat near them—you know that hunger can quickly lead to meltdowns. A well-fed child is usually a happy traveler. Of course, if they’re tired or bored, that’s a different story, but snacks are a great first line of defense. I always bring more than I think we’ll need. Better safe than snackless!
And here’s a little tip for fellow passengers: if you see a child getting fussy, consider offering the caregiver a granola bar or some crackers. A small gesture can go a long way.
What’s Allowed Through Security?
Before you pack your snack bag, it’s important to know the rules. According to the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority (CATSA):
Solid foods (like sandwiches, fruit, and baked goods) are generally allowed.
Non-solid foods (like yogurt, pudding, or Jello) must be in containers of 100 ml or less.
Liquids (including water, juice, and soda) are also limited to 100 ml per container.
Exception: If you're traveling with a child under 24 months, you're allowed to bring baby food, formula, breast milk, juice, and water in quantities greater than 100 ml.
